Abstract

CERON-BASTIDAS, Ximena Andrea. Relationship between quality of life and oral health in the adolescent population. CES odontol. [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.1, pp.38-46. ISSN 0120-971X.  https://doi.org/10.21615/cesodon.31.1.4.

The quality of life -understood from the perception of the individual on its position in life- is related directly with oral health, which is a part of integral human health. In that sense, adolescents are a high-risk group by multiple factors that could affect their quality of life, such as poverty, access to health services, socioeconomic stratum, in addition to biological and physiological changes occurring in this stage. This transition from childhood to adulthood could impact negatively oral health. The appearance of oral diseases like dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis, among others, could generate psychosocial problems associated with esthetics and self-esteem. This literature review took in consideration information from the year 2001 to present and included studies carried out in adolescent populations where a relationship between quality of life and oral health was established.

Keywords : quality of life; oral health; adolescence; risk.
