BEJARANO CASTRO, Mónica  e  MENDEZ PAZ, Fabián. Interaction of factors associated to an ulcer-pelvic disease. Rev Col Gastroenterol [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.1, pp. 25-32. ISSN 0120-9957.

Previous publications described that peptic ulcer disease is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs intake. However, many aspects of peptic ulcer disease ethiopatogenesis are still unknown. A hospital-based case-control study was carried out based on 1,157 individuals who consulted at a general practice clinic in Cali, Colombia, because of gastrointestinal symptoms. Cases were individuals with endoscopic diagnosis of ulcer (n=161) while controls had diagnosis of non-ulcer dyspepsia (n=996). Factors positively associated with peptic ulcer were H. pylori infection (OR:3.28) and NSAID intake (OR:1.75), besides age (>70 years OR:1.95), male sex (OR:2.99), peptic ulcer history (OR:4.65), smoking habits (OR:2.49), alcohol consumption (OR:1.74) and anticoagulants (OR:3.88). Our study suggests that the association between NSAID and peptic ulcer is modified by male sex and alcohol consumption.
