FARFAN, Yezid Alfonso et al. Prevalence of hepatitis C by RT-PCR in donors of the blood bank. Rev Col Gastroenterol [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.4, pp.308-312. ISSN 0120-9957.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of VHC by RT-PCR, and the agreement of ELISA with RT- PCR. Method: Cross-sectional study to calculate prevalence of infection by VHC using the tests of ELISA and RT-PCR, study of agreement between the two tests. The registries were taken from the Blood Bank of HUS between May of the 2004 to May of the 2005. The test of RT-PCR (AMPLICOR) for RNA of VHC was made to them. They took biochemistry and liver function to evaluate the association calculated Odds Ratio (OR) with its intervals of confidence of 95% with an alpha of 5% and the exact test of Fisher with its value P. Results: 6009 registries of donors were reviewed and 38 cases of VHC by ELISA for a prevalence of 0.6% by ELISA were detected. The prevalence of VHC by RT-PCR in the cases was of 6.6 by 10,000 donors. Positive the Predictive Value of ELISA for VHC was of 13.3%. In order to evaluate the association one calculated Odds Ratio (OR) with its intervals of confidence of 95% with an alpha of 5% and the exact test of Fisher with its value P. Conclusions: The prevalence of Hepatitis C diminishes when using the RT-PCR. The prevalence in donors was of 0.6% by ELISA and 0.06% by RT-PCR. The cause of this, is given by, the Positive Predictive Value of 13.3% of the ELISA.
