Abstract

ANGARITA SANTOS, Óscar Ricardo; GRANADOS, Carlos Eduardo  and  RICAURTE ACOSTA, Orlando. Frequency of Barrett´s esophagus in a series of endoscopic esofagic biopsies (2002-2007). Rev Col Gastroenterol [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.1, pp.4-12. ISSN 0120-9957.

Justification. The epidemiology of Barrett’s esophagus in our means is limited. Objectives. To determine the proportion between esofagic biopsies and gastric biopsies, to determine the frequency of histopathology of Barrett in a series of esofagic biopsies, to establish the agreement between histopathology and endoscopy in Barrett. Materials and methods. Revision of reports of pathology of the upper digestive biopsies of the database of the Department of Pathology of the National University of Colombia between 2002 and 2007. To the esophagus biopsies they were established gender, age, endoscopic diagnosis and histopathology. The cases were grouped according to endoscopic suspicion and to histopathology. The results were expressed in measures of central tendency and for the agreement between endoscopy and histology the statistical Kappa was used. Results. High digestive biopsies: 4032, 507 esofagic. Relationship esofagic: gastric biopsy 1:7. Lacked information in 43 esofagic biopsies, it was analyzed 464 biopsies. More frequent indication of esofagic biopsy: Barrett (45, 53%). Histopathology more frequent: Barrett without dysplasia (37.07%) not found dysplasia of high grade. Age average of Barrett without dysplasia in men: 61.68+ / - 14.04 years and in women: 63.67+ / - 13.86 years. The agreement between endoscopy and histology for Barrett was of 57.74% and the Kappa was 0.3632. Conclusions. Exists poor agreement between endoscopy and histology in the diagnose of Barrett’s esophagus.

Keywords : Barrett; esophagus; biopsies; endoscopy.
