BERNAL MESA, Jorge Alberto  e  DORADO A, Evelyn A. Impact radical gastric cancer surgery: Experience in two institutions in Medellín. Rev Col Gastroenterol [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.3, pp.251-258. ISSN 0120-9957.

Gastric cancer is the neoplasm with the highest mortality rate in Colombia. Surgery is the only curative treatment and D2 corresponds to the standard treatment showing prolonged patient survival and low operative morbidity, mortality and local recurrence. The purpose of the study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients with gastric cancer who underwent radical surgery vs. subtotal surgery. A retrospective cohort study was performed. Clinical outcomes of patients who underwent non radical surgery performed by a general surgeon were compared with patients who underwent radical surgery performed by an oncologist surgeon. This study demonstrates low operative mortality and morbidity among patients with gastric cancer treated with D2 lymphadenectomy by trained doctors. Findings are similar to those reported in literature. 95% of survivals (healthy and recurrences patients) with a nodal index < 20 percent of 74% and lymph nodes dissected greater than 15 vs. 35% of survivals for the patients whit subtotal surgery performance for general surgeons.
