Abstract
QUINTANA DUQUE, Mario Andrés; OTERO REGINO, William and MELGAR BURBANO, Christian. Proton pump inhibitors and risk of osteoporosis. Rev Col Gastroenterol [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.2, pp.169-179. ISSN 0120-9957.
The association between proton pump inhibitors and osteoporosis is a topic that has recently attracted considerable interest in the medical literature. There is evidence from epidemiological studies, which relates IBPs with an increased risk of osteoporosis and specifically with one of their most feared outcome, the hip fracture. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this association has not been able to establish clearly the biological plausibility of this phenomenon. Leading experts in the field discuss the causal relationship between the use of IBPs and osteoporosis based on the causal model proposed by Bradford-Hill. In future studies are necessary to define what is the dose and exposure time with it actually increases the risk and type of strategy to reduce the risk of fractures. In this article we critically review the literature to date on the subject.
Keywords : Osteoporosis; proton pump inhibitor; calcium; fractures.
