Resumen
VARELA-ALZATE, Mariana et al. Distal Esophageal Fibrovascular Polyp: A Case Presentation. Rev. colomb. Gastroenterol. [online]. 2025, vol.40, n.3, pp.380-384. Epub 12-Nov-2025. ISSN 0120-9957. https://doi.org/10.22516/25007440.1285.
Introduction:
Fibrovascular polyps are rare benign tumors of the esophageal submucosa, typically located in the proximal third. They can reach significant sizes and produce a variety of symptoms, including dysphagia and weight loss. These lesions account for less than 2% of all benign esophageal tumors.
Clinical Case:
We report the case of a 54-year-old male who presented with progressive dysphagia and weight loss. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a polyp at 38 cm from the dental arch. Endoscopic ultrasound confirmed a 25-mm fibrovascular polyp in the distal third of the esophagus. The patient underwent successful endoscopic polypectomy using a hot snare technique.
Conclusions:
This case highlights an atypical presentation of a fibrovascular polyp in the distal esophagus, contrasting with its usual proximal location. Successful management through endoscopic polypectomy demonstrates the efficacy of this approach for moderately sized polyps in this location. This report underscores the importance of considering fibrovascular polyps in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia, even when located distally, and contributes to the clinical knowledge regarding their diagnosis and management.
