OTALORA, Juan M; LIGARRETO, Gustavo A  e  ROMERO, Arturo. Agronomic characteristics and grain quality of the common 'popping' bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Agron. colomb. [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.1, pp.7-16. ISSN 0120-9965.

The common 'popping' bean is characterised by its cotyledons' ability to expand on being subjected to heat, making this type of common bean an innovative genetic resource, having interesting prospects as snack food or candy for both local and export markets. Given its origin and selection in the South-American Andes, this bean could adapt itself to high Andean areas in the Colombian ordillera and become a product diversifying itself and providing commercial prospects for the region's local inhabitants. This work evaluated the bean's agronomic and chemical characteristics, growth and functional opping properties of 29 popping bean accessions from Peru and Bolivia by correlating and selecting the variables having the greatest affect on characterisation. The information so obtained allowed the accessions to be grouped according to the aforementioned characteristics into two conglomerates. The variables providing the most information regarding the accessions were precocity and yield, followed by nutritional quality and percentage of expansion. Shell colour, predominant limb colour, pod colour and seed form featured amongst the nominal variables. Accessions selected for yield presented for plant were G12575, G12586, G7245 and G24886. Accessions having promising expansion percentage were G23729, G12570, G12623, G23715, G23736, G23742, G23767B, G12605, G23693 and 23695.

Palavras-chave : precocity; yield; nutritional quality; common 'popping' bean.
