Abstract

VITERI, Silvio E.  and  VELANDIA, Jorge. Evaluating vegetal association for potential as a source of organic matter for the soils of Samacá (Boyacá). Agron. colomb. [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.1, pp.138-146. ISSN 0120-9965.

This study was aimed at identifying association between those green manures proving to have the greatest potential as a source of organic matter for the soils of Samacá (Boyacá, Colombia). The study was carried out on three farms, one in the highlands and two in the valley. A representative soil sample was taken from each farm for fertility analysis. The treatments were represented by 12 triple green manure associations. The species included in the associations were vicia, lupine, oat, sunflower, and castor-oil plants and forage turnips. A randomied complete block experimental design was used, having 12 treatments and 3 replications. Experimental plot size was 80 m2. The variables evaluated for association and weeds were green matter production by specie, and for association dry matter. The incidence of disease and insect attack on the species was also observed, as well as any potential cost saving which farmers would obtain by using the associations instead of chicken droppings. The results indicated that the most promising specie was forage turnips, followed by oats, sunflower and vicia. The associations having the highest potential as source of organic matter and potentail cost savings for farmers on high lands were vicia + forage turnips + sunflowers, and vicia + oats + forage turnips. Vicia + oats + forage turnips, vicia + forage turnips + sun- flowers, and vicia + oats + sunflowers had the best association for the valley.

Keywords : green manure; forage oats; forage sunflowers; forage turnips; vicia.
