Abstract

TRIANA-MORENO, Luz Amparo; RODRIGUEZ, Nohra Cecilia  and  GARCIA, Jesús. Chagras’ agroforestal system dynamics as the basis for indigenous production in the Amazonian Trapezium (Colombia). Agron. colomb. [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.1, pp.158-169. ISSN 0120-9965.

The indigenous tradition, the pertinence of the Amazonian catchment basin and proximity to an important urban centre like Leticia in Colombia are elements characterising Ciudad Jitoma’s production system; such factors distinguish it from other forms of indigenous and non-indigenous production found in the same Amazonian region. This community’s production system is illustrated in the present study by observing the elements making up its interrelationships. The Chagras’ agroforestal system is identified as being the basis of the community’s production activities; each stage of this production cycle is described. Other elements in the production system are commented on as is their importance as additional sources of income for indigenous families.

Keywords : production system; sustainable agriculture; Colombian Amazonian region; Ciudad Jitoma; huitoto.
