Abstract

LOPEZ, Jesús Edgardo  and  LIGARRETO, Gustavo Adolfo. Yield evaluation in 12 promissory genotypes of climbing bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) red ball and popping types for cold zones of Colombia. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.2, pp.238-246. ISSN 0120-9965.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a basic food of the Andean region and is a rich source of low-cost protein. Improvement of yield of this legume would enhance its competitiveness on the international market. The principal objective of this work was to evaluate promising genotypes of climbing bean with red seeded or popping grain types for cool high altitude zones of Colombia using path analysis. A completely randomized block design with three replicates was used to evaluate 10 genotypes of climbing bean. Path analysis for yield per plant and correlations among yield and its components showed that number of pods per plant was the most important characteristic in the determination of yield, compared with weight of 100 grains or number of grains per pod, both for red seeded or popping grain types.

Keywords : path analysis; yield components; legumes; climbing bean.
