Abstract

In the piedemonte Llanero, Arrayana mandarins grafted on Cleopatra mandarin are slow to come into bearing. For this purpose, it is necessary to select rootstocks, which improve the production and quality of Arrayana mandarins in the first harvests. In the experiment established in July 1997 in soils of the higher terrace of piedemonte of Meta (Typic Haplustox), six rootstocks were used in the Colombian citriculture. Before transplanting correctives were applied to increase the base saturation over 60%. Trees on citrumelo Swingle rootstock had higher cumulative yield for five harvests surpassing Volkameriana lemon, and later were Sunki × English, and Cleopatra mandarin rootstocks without statistical differences among them, followed by Sunki × Jacobson, and the lowest yield observed on Carrizo rootstock. In the last monitoring, the tree height was similar for all rootstocks except Carrizo, which presented the smallest height and canopy volume. The highest yield efficiency of canopy volume, on an average over five harvests, was registered on trees of Swingle, followed by Volkameriana, Sunki × English, and Sunki × Jacobsen, respectively (without statistical differences among them), followed by Cleopatra and, finally, Carrizo. The highest fruit size was developed on Volkmeriana and Swingle rootstocks, followed by Sunki × English, Sunki × Jacobsen, Carrizo, and Cleopatra, respectively. All rootstocks presented similar fruit quality, except Vokmeriana, which had lowest total soluble solids (TSS) content and TSS/total titratable acid ratio.
