GOMEZ, Sylvia; DIAZ, Gustavo  e  NUNEZ, Víctor Manuel. Evaluation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner proteins toxicity on cotton bollweevil Anthonomus grandis Boheman. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.2, pp.296-301. ISSN 0120-9965.

The cotton bollweevil, Anthonomus grandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is considered one of the principal pests of cotton crop, not only for the economical and social damages, but also for its early appearance that interrupts the proper pest management. The importance of an intelligent control consist in the fact that this insect behaves a key pest with a damage capacity between 50-90% to the crop if not controlled. In the present study, it was established a bioassay to determine the toxic activity of the proteins Cry3Aa and Cry1Ia (produced by Bacillus thuringiensis) on bollweevil populations. For the bioassay, an artificial diet with bacterial extracts withcomplex spore-crystal was used. The results showed that the strain var. san diego was toxic to the larvae at the first instar under laboratory conditions, using a lethal concentration of 50 (CL50) equivalent to 147.6143 µg total protein per mL in the final volume of the artificial diet. Therefore, this result suggests a potential alternative for the control of this pest of cotton culture.
