ORDUZ-RODRIGUEZ, Javier Orlando  e  FISCHER, Gerhard. Water balance and influence of water stress on floral induction and flower development of ‘Arrayana’ mandarin in the Piedemont Plains of Colombia. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.2, pp.255-263. ISSN 0120-9965.

In order to determine water requirements of citrus fruits grown in the Piedemont Plains of Meta Department, Colombia, and quantify duration and intensity of water stress and its influence on floral induction and development of ‘Arrayana’ mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco), firstly, the climatic information collected at the C.I. La Libertad (Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia) over two decades was revised. Secondly, a case study was realized in a dry season between November 2002 and March 2003 in a culture of ‘Arrayana` mandarin grafted on 6 year old Cleopatra mandarin. The climatic records and, every second week, the content of soil moisture at two depths (0 to 10 cm and 10 to 20 cm), and the duration of the phenological processes related to flowering were registered. In the Piedemont Plains of Meta, the citrus fruits need 1.046 mm of water per year that is 77% entire annual evapotranspiration. For nine months every year, the precipitation is higher than the evapotranspiration and, for three months, there is a water deficit. The precipitation value of 29 mm was needed for growth initiation. Ramification started two weeks later after beginning of the rain season. The anthesis and fall of petals and stigma occurred in the third and fourth week, respectively. The soil moisture content measured at the depth of 0 to 20 cm, decreased below the permanent wilting point during two months. The duration of flowering between anthesis and petal abscission lasted nine days.
