Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Marcela et al. Recognition and population fluctuation of weeds in spinach crop (Spinacea oleracea L.) in the municipality of Cota, Cundinamarca. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.1, pp.87-96. ISSN 0120-9965.

Although agricultural weeds have tangible effects on crop yield and quality, farmers often do not value the importance of weed management as much as pest or disease control. In this paper, the various weeds associated with spinach in the municipality of Cota (Cundinamarca) were described. The weed specie composition was compared with that one found between 2003 and 2007. A survey was carried out in order to determine the farmer awareness of agricultural weeds and current management practices. The dominant weeds in terms of density (percentage species on 0.25 m2) and coverage (percentage coverage on 0.25 m2) were Urtica urens L. (25.85 and 20.54%), Capsella bursa-pastoris L. (1.78 and 6.71%), Ambrosia sp. (1.61 and 2.46%), Galinsoga ciliata L. (0.79 and 3.67%), Stellaria media (L.) Vill. (0.58 and 4.46%), and Chenopodium album L. (0.52 and 2.21%). The farmers that plant spinach in Cota were divided in 6 groups taking into account 251 practices and 31 variables, but considering weed control as the most important variable, they could be grouped in those who control weeds manually and ones who control them manually and chemically.

Keywords : Urtica urens L.; Ambrosia sp.; multipurpose correspondence analysis; cluster; population dynamics.
