Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Luis Ernesto. Theories on cultivated potato taxonomy (Solanum L. sect. Petota Dumort.). A review. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2009, vol.27, n.3, pp.305-312. ISSN 0120-9965.

The present review seeks to bring together different proposals about the taxonomy of cultivated potatoes and their tuberbearing wild relatives (Solanum L. sect. Petota Dumort.). Throughout history, taxonomists have introduced discordant criteria about the classification of this group. Up to date, no agreement has been achieved, because the limits among species are not clear, and they frequently interact. It is therefore important to generate a consensual, coherent, practical and definite proposal for potato taxonomy that allows knowing the real number of species and their limits, interrelations and continuous changes. In turn, this information is necessary to facilitate better germplasm utilization in breeding programs.

Keywords : Solanum tuberosum; tuber-bearing wild species.
