Abstract

Cape gooseberry, which is the most exported Colombian exotic fruit, is commercially propagated by seed, but its high genetic variability causes growth, vigor, yield and fruit quality heterogeneity. Asexual propagation by cuttings can be a viable alternative but it is necessary to ensure adequate rhyzogenesis and the formation of a strong root system. For a period of 90 days, the present study evaluated the effect of five concentrations of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA; 0, 200, 400, 600 and 800 mg L-1) and two substrates (peat moss, and a 1:1 v/v mixture of black soil and rice husks) on the rooting and growth of terminal cuttings from adult plants. The best results were observed when applying 800 mg L-1 IBA to cuttings planted in peat moss. This treatment combination determined the highest rooting percentage and the largest root length, roots fresh and dry mass, leaf number and leaf area scores.
