VALENCIA R., Rubén A.  e  LIGARRETO M., Gustavo A.. Soybean breeding (Glycine max [L.] Merril) for the Colombian Altillanura: a prospective and conceptual view. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.155-163. ISSN 0120-9965.

Soybean is an essential raw material in the manufacture of balanced concentrates for animal feeding, particularly for the avian and swine production chains. In addition, it constitutes a rotation alternative for low altitude tropical regions. The national soybean production covers a low percentage of the national demand, which implies high import volumes. This production system depends mostly of the variety Soyica P-34, whose limitations make it necessary to generate new alternatives with comparative advantages. Despite its aluminum saturated acid soils, the Colombian eastern high plains (the Altillanura) has a strong potential for the competitive production of soybean. For these reasons, breeding programs should emphasize specific adaptation, disease tolerance, high yield, and good quality grain. Hence, the purpose of this paper, framed in a prospective vision, has been to document the main developments in soybean breeding for the Altillanura region.

Palavras-chave : aluminum tolerance; selection methods; varieties.
