The soil recovery process in a degraded area should have as basic principle the return of minimum conditions for plant establishment and growth. The present study aimed to evaluate the establishment and development of a series of exotic and native species under different doses of soil amendment in a degraded area with severe erosion in Uberlândia-MG. The experiment was carried out in a gravel covered rural area from February to May of 2009. It evaluated the performance of eight species, four of them exotic (Acacia mangium, Gliricidia sepium, Mimosa artemisiana, Acacia auriculiformis) and four native (Gonçalo Alves - Astronium fraxinifolium; Mutamba - Guazuma ulmifolia; Angico vermelho - Anadenanthera macrocarpa; e Ingá - Inga edulis). Each species received four doses of lime (0, 50, 100 and 200 g of CaCO3) resulting in 32 treatments with two replications, under a completely randomized experimental design. Subjected to analysis of variance and compared by the Scott - Knott test at 5% probability, the studied parameters were stem diameter, crown width and plant height at 60 and 120 days after planting. During the study period, the evaluated lime doses did not determine any significant differences in the evaluated parameters. By contrast, there was significant variation in development among species for all variables. G. sepium showed better establishment and early growth in diameter, followed by Ingá and Mutamba. The native species Ingá, Angico vermelho and Mutamba stood out for final plant height, as well as the exotic ones G. sepium, A. auriculiformis and A. mangium, thus revealing their potential to be used in the ecological succession of degraded areas in the Cerrado
