Abstract

MUNEVAR SALAZAR, ALEJANDRO  and  BERNAL CHAVEZ, JULIO ALEXANDER. On some Words and some Things: the Ethnographic Dimension of the Linguistic-Ethnographic Atlas of Colombia. Cuad. linguist. hisp. [online]. 2018, n.31, pp.19-35. ISSN 0121-053X.

From 1954 to 1983, the Caro and Cuervo Institute created the Atlas Lingüístico-Etnográfico de Colombia (ALEC). The ALEC is divided into a linguistic dimension, which is the first and most important of the Atlas, and a second, complementary, ethnographic dimension. In accordance with the postulates of the philological school of Wõrter und Sachen (words and things), and with the purpose of studying rural Colombian popular culture, this research aims to give an account of the relation between the Spanish spoken by Colombian peasants and their everyday activities. The purpose of this document is to answer the following question: What constitutes the ethnographic dimension of the ALEC? We examine this dimension of the ALEC based on four perspectives: 1) "ethnographic intention"; 2) "ethnographic method"; 3) "ethnographic data"; and 4) "ethnographic object".

Keywords : ethnography; linguistic geography; Wõrter und Sachen; Atlas Lingüístico-Etnográfico de Colombia.
