Abstract

OCHOA SIERRA, LIGIA  and  HERNANDEZ, MARÍA MERCEDES. Role of Discourse Markers in Reading Comprehension. Cuad. linguist. hisp. [online]. 2022, n.40, pp.1-.  Epub May 14, 2023. ISSN 0121-053X.  https://doi.org/10.19053/0121053x.n40.2022.15501.

This paper is the result of a study aimed at determining whether the absence of discourse markers -information structurers and connectors- affects the level of reading comprehension. For this purpose, an experiment was implemented with first-semester students from various academic programs of a Colombian public university using a quantitative-descriptive approach with a quasi-experimental design, through a reading comprehension test with a control group and an experimental one. The experimental group received the text without the markers. The data were analyzed based on a statistical test of the research hypothesis. The results showed that the presence -or absence- of this class of markers does not affect the processing of literal or inferential information from the text; however, it does so concerning the metalinguistic processing of the text, which implies a higher level of abstraction on the part of the reader.

Keywords : reading comprehension; connectors; information structures; metalinguistic skills; and discourse markers.
