Abstract

SIMA-LOZANO, EYDER GABRIEL. Linguistic Awareness about the Mayan Language in the Linguistic Landscape of Mérida. Cuad. linguist. hisp. [online]. 2023, n.41, e02.  Epub Jan 27, 2024. ISSN 0121-053X.  https://doi.org/10.19053/0121053x.n41.2023.15817.

This paper analyzes the awareness towards the Mayan language from a sociolinguistic point of view, based on the linguistic landscape of the city of Mérida by monolingual Spanish-speakers Yucatecans. The constructs of linguistic landscape and linguistic awareness are the bases of the work. A methodology of qualitative analysis has been followed, using the inductive method. Among the results, it is observed that there are divergences regarding the language and the speakers. Thus, linguistic awareness shows an urban conceptualization that gives prestige to the Mayan language, but not always to its speakers, and some informants critically point out the absence of literacies in Mayan language for its speakers. Nevertheless, the presence of the Mayan language in the linguistic landscape of Mérida is positive.

Keywords : linguistic landscape; monolingual Yucatecan; Spanish; Mayan language; Mérida.
