Abstract

MEJIA SARASTI, FRANCISCO JAVIER  and  MEDINA MEJIA, JUAN FERNANDO. EVALUATION OF A SERIES OF PATIENTS WITH ESOPHAGEAL ATRESIA, DURING A 5-YEAR PERIOD. Iatreia [online]. 2003, vol.16, n.3, pp.195-201. ISSN 0121-0793.

BETWEEN JANUARY 1ST 1997 and December 31st 2001 we attended 73 patients with the diagnosis of esophageal atresia at San Vicente de Paúl Hospital, in Medellín, Colombia. Average gestational age was 37 weeks and average weight, 2458 grams; 88% of these patients had also distal tracheo-esophageal fistula while in 11% there was no fistula. The most common treatment was the resection of the fistula plus primary correction through termino-terminal anastomosis. We performed 3 gastric ascents in cases without fistula with a long gap atresia. There were no intraoperative complications and the most common postoperative complication was stenosis of which we found 27 cases. The overall survival rate was 83%. Pneumonia frequency before surgery was 63% and it was related to the age in days before intervention. Mortality rate was related to both weight and congenital malformations. We concluded that patients of our series had similar characteristics to those reported by other authors, and that our treatment approach was comparable to that of other groups.
