Abstract

ZULETA TOBON, John Jairo. Contraception: What method should be selected?. Iatreia [online]. 2008, vol.21, n.3, pp.280-291. ISSN 0121-0793.

Background: Women considering the use of contraception should receive detailed information enabling them to select the most convenient method and to use it effectively. Objetive: To provide valid information and guidelines for health care personnel on the use of contraceptive methods. Metods: A systematic bibliographic review was carried out on the efficacy, effectiveness, and costeffectivenes of the contraceptive methods available in Colombia, and of their continuation rates. Based on the review, a proposal is presented for the selection of the most convenient method, aimed at women without medical conditions that may contraindicate their use. Results: The currently available long-acting reversible contraceptive methods (intrauterine devices, the intrauterine system, injectable contraceptives and implants) are more cost-effective than the combined oral contraceptive pill.

Keywords : Barrier methods of contraception; Contraception; Hormonal contraception; Intrauterine devices; Tubal ligation; Vasectomy.
