Abstract

CARVAJAL KALIL, Luis Fernando; GOMEZ GOMEZ, Horacio; GARCES SAMUDIO, Carlos Guillermo  and  RUZ MONTES, Miguel Antonio. Voriconazole use during the neonatal period. Report of two cases. Iatreia [online]. 2011, vol.24, n.2, pp.191-196. ISSN 0121-0793.

Serious mycotic infections are now more frequent in the intensive care units and they increase morbidity and mortality rates. New antifungal agents have been developed in recent years, including voriconazole. This is the drug of choice for treatment of patients, either adults or children older than two years, with aspergillosis, and is also a therapeutic option in other mycotic infections. However, experience in newborns is limited: safety profile, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are largely unknown in this age group. We report the cases of two male neonates with mycotic infections (Aspergillus and Rhodotorula) that were treated with voriconazole; both tolerance and clinical response were good.

Keywords : Azoles; Mycoses; Newborn; Voriconazol.
