VELEZ ALVAREZ, Consuelo; BETANCURTH LOAIZA, Diana Paola  and  SANCHEZ PALACIO, Natalia. Psychometric validation of the DESOSA40 for the measurement of social determinants of health. Rev. Univ. Ind. Santander. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.57, a18.  Epub Aug 20, 2025. ISSN 0121-0807.  https://doi.org/10.18273/saluduis.57.e:25v57a18.

Introduction:

Social Determinants of Health play a crucial role in health equity, since they impact inequalities in public health. Instrument validation is a tool that provides objective data for social intervention.

Objective:

To evaluate the psychometric properties of the 81-item Social Determinants of Health instrument (DESOSA81) to measure the Social Determinants of Health in the Colombian population.

Methodology:

The instrument was validated with a sample of 2,725 people from five regions through surveys and psychometric tests.

Results:

A reduced version, the DESOSA40, was developed with 40 items distributed in three dimensions: healthy environment, living environment and emotional environment. Psychometric tests confirmed its internal consistency and validity. Exploratory factor analysis identified key factors in each dimension.

Conclusion:

The DESOSA40 characterizes the Social Determinants of Health in Colombia, facilitates decision-making in the improvement of living and health conditions, and contributes to reducing inequities
