Abstract
CASTILLO-SIERRA, Diana Marcela; OLAYA-SANCHEZ, Alejandro; RAMOS-ALVAREZ, Alba Yaneth and SANCHEZ-RODRIGUEZ, Javier Mauricio. Air Pollution Levels and Their Association With Arrhythmic Events: A Systematic Review. Rev. Univ. Ind. Santander. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.57, a29. Epub Oct 24, 2025. ISSN 0121-0807. https://doi.org/10.18273/saluduis.57.e:25v57a29.
Introduction:
Air pollution levels have negative impacts on cardiovascular health.
Objective:
Synthesize the scientific evidence of the last 5 years on the association of pollution levels with the appearance of cardiac arrhythmias.
Methodology:
A literature search was conducted in Science Direct, EBSCO HOST, Doaj, Latindex, Pubmed, Redalyc, Scielo and Biblioteca Virtual en Salud databases. For the selection of articles, the PICO mnemonic (population, intervention, comparison and outcomes) was considered, and the scientific quality was evaluated with the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Spanish CASPe tool. The synthesis and analysis were carried out using the office Excel tool.
Results:
25 primary articles were selected, and four categories were established for their understanding: arrhythmic effects of pollutant levels, pathophysiological changes, vulnerable population and prevention measures.
Conclusion:
Exposure to air contaminating particles has a significant association with electrocardiographic changes and cardiac arrhythmias.
