Resumen

NORDMAN, Daniel. The frontier: notions and problems in France from the 16th to 18th century. hist.crit. [online]. 2006, n.32, pp.154-171. ISSN 0121-1617.

This article addresses the concept of the frontier in France between the 16th and 18th centuries. It is divided into five lines of thought from which the historicity of frontiers and the active role that social actors play in their construction are highlighted. The first revolves around the signs, words, and maps through which the frontier was represented. The second centers on the relations that this concept configures in space. Third, the article addresses the frontier-size relation in order to highlight its mutable character, how it helps shape territorial identities, and its effect on the dynamics of demands, rights, and reclamations regarding land. The fourth line of thought addresses dependency as a frontier process in terms of spatial inter-referentiality and the hierarchization of rights. Contiguity, proximity, and spatial organization constitute the last axis of thought.

Palabras clave : Frontier; France; territory; 16th century; 17th century; 18th century.
