FERRERO BLANCO, María Dolores. VIOLENCE AND REPRESSION IN THE TWILIGHT OF THE SOMOZA REGIME: JAILHOUSE CONDITIONS FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS. hist.crit. [online]. 2009, n.39, pp.154-178. ISSN 0121-1617.

This article demonstrates how the authoritarian system of the Somoza regime of Nicaragua was refected in the politicization of the justice system, the arbitrary detentions, and the failure to comply with existing legislation. Through the regime's repressive apparatus, the National Guard, all kinds of abuses were committed, including the habitual practice of torture during interrogations and an all-out assault on the opposition. Through letters secretly smuggled out of jail, political prisoners of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional or FSLN) managed to inform the Nicaraguan people of the conditions to which they were subject inside prison.

Palavras-chave : National Guard; FSLN; Abuse; Torture; Peasants; Political Prisoners; Nicaragua; Somoza.
