Abstract

TAPIA FIGUEROA, Claudio. CHILEAN FOREIGN POLICY IN THE REGIONAL DILEMMA: THE ECUADORIAN-PERUVIAN TERRITORIAL CONFLICT CIRCA 1910. hist.crit. [online]. 2011, n.43, pp.156-173. ISSN 0121-1617.

The study of interstate relations in Latin America at the turn of the twentieth century sheds light on processes of territorial consolidation. Bilateral territorial disputes gave way to the intervention of third states, either pursuing their own national interests or out of a desire to promote agreements to avoid war. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to examine Chile's foreign policy position regarding the territorial dispute between Ecuador and Peru circa 1910. Even though Chile had interests in Ecuador and unresolved disputes with Peru, it was able to maintain a discourse promoting regional peace and negotiation.

Keywords : International relations; diplomacy; Chile; Ecuador; Peru.
