LUX, Martha. NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE CATEGORY OF GENDER IN HISTORY: FROM THE MARGINS TO THE CENTER. hist.crit. [online]. 2011, n.44, pp.128-156. ISSN 0121-1617.

In this article, we argue that the category of gender is a key conceptual tool with which to interpret the significance of actions of men and women in cultural, social, and political realms of any society furrowed by relations of power. Although the scope of the notion is wide, our interest is studying how gender relations were inscribed during the democratic revolutions at the turn of the nineteenth century in New Granada. We seek to demonstrate the significance of the category of gender to understand the constitution of the new social order, since it was fundamental to both the deconstruction of the colonial order and the reconstruction of the republican order. We provide a brief overview of how the category acquired a place within the social sciences. We also spend some time discussing the relationship between democracy, citizenship, and gender, referring to work that, in the study of communities and their practices, have highlighted how popular classes, which were initially excluded from citizenship, participated in politics, negotiating with local, regional, or national values.

Palavras-chave : Gender; New Granada; social order; power; democracy; citizenship; hegemony; domination; capital; race; class; moral economy.
