Abstract

This article analyzes the reception of the Instituto Literario's iniciative to create a public library in Cali during the Regeneration. To do so, it examines brief public statements as well as various book donations, which are useful to understand the cultural climate of the period and the dynamics of urban literary consumption. It also explores how women and other social groups responded to the initiative. The article concludes by looking at the role of the interational book market in promoting certain tendencies, titles, and authors.
