GARCIA, Víctor Manuel. THERAPEUTIC ACCIDENTS AND NEW HEALTH PRACTICES: COLOMBIAN MEDICINE IN THE FACE OF THE ANTIDIPHTHERIA VACCINATION CATASTROPHE OF MEDELLIN, 1930. hist.crit. [online]. 2012, n.46, pp.110-131. ISSN 0121-1617.
This article explores the context and records of the first Colombian iatrogenic catastrophe in a vaccination campaign against diphtheria in nurseries in Medellin. Research reveals that, although therapeutic innovation allowed national medicine to consolidate, this catastrophe tested its legitimacy and led local physicians to work on new research regarding the safety and efficacy of using serums and vaccines. Through different sources, it also studies the context in which local health product laboratories were created, the media coverage of the catastrophe, and the perception of the public regarding the risk of biomedical practices.
