Abstract

ARROYO CHICAIZA, Claudia Viviana. Sociabilities in the Early Years of the Republic. Nueva Granada 1820-1839: Nova Granada 1820-1839. hist.crit. [online]. 2014, n.54, pp.145-168. ISSN 0121-1617.

This article analyzes the process underway between 1820 and 1839 that permitted the entry of the people into what was denominated formal and secular sociability in Nueva Granada. It shows that this entry into the secular associative universe responded mainly to political bickering among the governing elite or among a group of persons who had the possibility of being part of it. For this purpose a great variety of documents produced by the associations of the era were studied - e.g., statutes, regulations, membership lists, etc., as well as information found in the Neogranadino press of that time and various other sources consulted.

Keywords : Association; cultural elite; artisans; farmers; elections.
