Abstract

SCAPOL MONTEIRO, Michelli Cristine. São Paulo and Buenos Aires: The Construction of the Image of Origin in the 20th Century. hist.crit. [online]. 2015, n.55, pp.73-100. ISSN 0121-1617.  https://doi.org/10.7440/histcrit55.2015.04.

This article examines four historical paintings from Brazil and Argentina: the Fundação de São Paulo by Oscar Pereira da Silva; the Fundação de São Paulo by Antônio Parreiras; the Primera Misa en Buenos Aires by José Bouchet; and the Fundación de Buenos Aires by José Moreno Carbonero. The objective is to understand the idea of nation that the political elites of these two countries constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. For this purpose, some of the connections among these works were studied in order to establish similarities and the social tensions caused by European immigration and by contact with indigenous groups.

Keywords : Cultural history; historical painting; São Paulo; Buenos Aires; comparative history; collective memory; imaginary.
