Abstract

Frogs of genus Dendrobates retain alkaloids in their skins that are probably related to their diets, so alkaloids composition can be affected by the offer on food resources. This study assessed the differences in diet and alkaloid composition between two populations of D. truncatus that inhabit habitats with different degree of perturbation. Consequently, pitfall traps were installed, and gastric washings were applied to all individuals. Finally, alkaloid composition by thin-layer chromatography and identification by GC-MS was determined. The chromatography revealed substances that were present only for the population in the less disturbed zone. On the other hand, mass spectrometry indicated that alkaloids as indolizidine, decahydroquinoline and histrionicotoxin are present in both populations, but that the zones differ in the presence of alkaloids from the quinilones family. However, no differences between populations were found in diet or food availability, which suggest that composition of alkaloids is not influenced by dietary differences. Therefore, results indicate that habitat perturbation can probably affect alkaloid composition in D. truncatus, but differences between zones are not related to differences in diet
