Resumen

MARIS SHMITE, Stella  y  NIN, María Cristina. Sub-Saharan Africa: Conflicts and Environmental Degradation in the Sahel. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.2, pp.205-219. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v24n2.50221.

The Sahel is a region located south of the Sahara Desert that is affected by a combination of problems, including droughts, soil degradation, demographic pressure, malnutrition, poverty, migration, conflicts, and refugees, among others. In this region, environmental changes strongly impact sociocultural, political and economic dimensions. These changes also act as multipliers of social tensions and stimulate political instability. The goal of this article is to identify these problems and analyze environmental variables to address the territorial context. This study seeks to interpret a range of sources, such as cartographical data, statistics and academic publications, that may allow for not only the complex network of persisting conflicts but also emerging conflicts in this cross-border African region to be comprehensively visualized and understood.

Palabras clave : environment; conflicts; geography; territorial problems; Sahel.
