Abstract

MATURANA MIRANDA, Francisco; ROJAS BOTTNER, Andrés  and  POBLETE LOPEZ, David. History, Evolution and Structure of the System of Cities: The Case of Bio Bio Region (Chile). Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.2, pp.39-58. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v25n2.45787.

Spatial interaction is one of the foundations for understanding the dynamics occurring in the geographic space. City systems behave under this spatial logic and the interactions between urban centers largely determine the dependency and differentiation relationships in the territory. Using population data and a combination of the methodology of graph theory and ascending hierarchical classification, this article analyzes the system of cities in the Bío-Bío Region of Chile. The results express the hierarchical stability of populated centers, the increase in spatial disparities and the decline of small and intermediate cities, explained by historical-economic processes and functional aspects.

Keywords : Chile; spatial disparities; urban hierarchy; Bío-Bío region; systems of cities.
