Abstract

The overall objective of this article is to show how contemporary urbanization presents an inflection between metropolization, product of the industrial revolution, and metropolization, product of factors associated with globalization, which would suggest a real urban revolution. Methodologically, the text reviews the most relevant new expressions and descriptions that refer to this phenomenon, to identify the recurrent attributes of metropolitan changes. The article´s contributions focus on the recognition of the emergence of new metropolitan territories with regards to the social, historical and geographical characteristics of each territory, on the description of their defining characteristics and on the need to build a new epistemology for the study of contemporary urbanization.
