Abstract

PENA, Luis Berneth. Defending the Capital: Securing Bogota´s Space during the Uribe Vélez Administration. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.2, pp.251-275. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v25n2.54721.

With the massive military operations during the government of Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) aiming to expel the guerrillas from main metropolitan areas, it became evident that the defense and securitization of the dependent spaces of cities is a key element of State territoriality. Here the article analyzes the place of these security policies within the set of territorial policies of the State, emphasizing that the security strategies are not a new field of political intervention but an essential problem in the constitution of the State. The article analyzes as well the multilevel network of actors participating in the securitization of Bogota´s metropolitan region, exposing the development of the military operation "Freedom One". With this analysis we seek to constitute a line of research on urban geopolitics.

Keywords : Bogotá; dependent space; space of engagement; urban geopolitics; operation Freedom One; security policies; democratic security policy; politics of space.
