Abstract

LONGHI, Fernando  and  OSATINSKY, Ariel. Production Structure, Poverty and Employment Problems in the Provincias Pampeanas and Norteñas of Argentina during the Transition from the Twentieth to Twenty-First Century. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.1, pp.77-99. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v26n1.51011.

Abstract Historically, Argentina has presented profound regional socioeconomic inequalities. The provinces of northwest Argentina showed significant gaps with respect to the Pampa provinces in the production of wealth. Thus, in the late twentieth century, while poor households in the Pampa provinces amounted to 32.9% of its population, in the north this was double. This article aims to comparatively analyze the characteristics of this poverty, considering departmental and provincial scales, then linking these with economic and productive transformations and employment issues throughout the twentieth century and early twenty-first century. The results warn of a notorious process of socio-territorial fragmentation as a corollary of persistent inequality. The resurgence of this fragmentation in certain Argentine provinces and departments is also highlighted.

Keywords : productive structure; socioterritorial fragmentation; northwest Argentina; Argentinian pampa; poverty.
