Abstract

GAVIRIA RIOS, Mario. Spatial Configuration of the Regional Urban Formation of the Colombian Eje Cafetero. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.1, pp.155-170. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v26n1.56666.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to characterize the regional-urban spatial formation of the Eje Cafetero (Colombia) and evaluate its condition as a polycentric urban system. The document uses a morphological approach associated with the population distribution in the territory to identify centers and subcenters in the system of cities that make up the spatial formation. The exercise is complemented with an analysis of hierarchy and the unequal conditions of weight and dimension between the cities to estimate indices based on the principles of "rank-size" and urban primacy. The evidence leads to a definition of the urban system as a region city with polycentric structure.

Keywords : region city; morphology; polycentrism; urban region; system of cities.
