Abstract

BENITES-LAZARO, Lira Luz; MELLO-THERY, Neli Aparecida de; SIMOES, André Felipe  and  GNACCARINI, Isabel. Governance and Sustainable Development: Participation of Local Stakeholders in Clean Development Mechanism Projects in Brazil. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.2, pp.227-241. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v27n2.66336.

This article examines the participation of local stakeholders and the contribution to sustainable development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Brazil. A mixed textual analysis methodology (qualitative and quantitative) was used to assess 341 Project Design Documents. The results show that most CDM projects brought some benefit for sustainable development, in addition to validating that local stakeholders were consulted. However, it was not possible to identify participatory decision-making mechanisms. The study also shows the importance of adopting rules at the local level to strengthen the scope of the two objectives studied.

Keywords : sustainable development; governance; clean development mechanism (CDM); social participation.
