In recent years, have become evident the inability to generate adequate models of land use in protected areas and the consequences for the achievement of conservation goals. Many influential conservation scientists have long recognized the need to renew conservation strategies incorporating the visions of the social sciences and the humanities. The current challenge leads us to wonder what the true contribution of these sciences could be and how to incorporate the human dimension to achieve the true potential for transformation of the current paradigms. Through a critical conceptual analysis and addressing the current problematic situation of protected areas, the objective was to reinterpret the key concepts of space and land use planning to make contributions to the global debate on how to achieve an effective renewal in traditional biodiversity conservation strategies and rethink the space of protected areas as a complex space that must respond to multiple visions and needs. The results made it possible to clarify what role the social sciences could play in this process of renewal, synthesizing many of the claims that so far have not had much attention in the context of protected areas. In addition, it was possible to make a series of proposals to rethink the current forms of intervention and management of these spaces through premises that should serve as a guide when initiating planning processes and defining management strategies.

Highlights: reflection article that addresses the problem of how to integrate the human dimension into conservation in protected areas. Contributions are made for understanding of the relationships between humans and nature and to improving conservation outcomes. A guide is provided on how to incorporate the social perspective in conservation science, practice, and policy.
