Abstract

GARCIA-DELGADILLO, Juan Mauricio. Use of MODIS-MAIAC (AOD) Satellite Images as Qualitative Indicators of the Concentration of Particulate Matter PM25 in Bogota City. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2022, vol.31, n.1, pp.211-221.  Epub Sep 06, 2022. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v31n1.87247.

Particulate matter is the most-related contaminant to respiratory and cardiac diseases in the planet. In Colombia, it is frequently monitored as concentration of PM25 with air quality stations, that are run by government organizations. In addition to monitoring in some countries, the use of satellite images with AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth) has recently become popular to estimate PM2; however, in Colombia, this alternative has not been explored yet. This research seeks to assess the potential use of MODIS-MAIAC images as a qualitative indicator for PM25 with data of two dates on a normal day and low mobility associated to the quarantine of the Bogota mayor's office by Covid-19. For the data of the two dates, correlations were found between the AOD and the PM25 of 0.60 and 0.62. Interpolation maps were made with the data for PM25, which gave acceptable results.

Main ideas:

Research article that reviews the potential use of MODIS-MAIAC images with measurements of aerosol optical depth as a qualitative indicator for PM25 with data from two dates on a normal day and low mobility associated with the Covid-19 quarantine enacted by Bogota City Hall.

Keywords : AOD; satellite images; particulate matter 2.5; MODIS-MAIAC; Aerosol Optical Depth.
