VILLEGAS ACOSTA, Flor Ángela. Retrospective analysis of maxillofacial surgical procedures performed under general anesthesia at the maxillofacial surgical unit of Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paúl between the years 2000-2001. Rev Fac Odontol Univ Antioq [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.2, pp.60-68. ISSN 0121-246X.

INTRODUCTION: the purpose of maxillofacial surgery is the correction of dentofacial deformities derived from alterations in development, trauma or pathology. The objective of this study is to carry out a retrospective analysis of maxillofacial surgical procedures performed under general anesthesia at the maxillofacial surgery unit of Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paúl during the years 2000-2001 in order to establish the spectrum of the specialty within this medical center. METHODS: a descriptive analysis of the data was carried out using variables such as: age, gender, type of surgery, diagnosis, and complications. RESULTS: in total, during the two years of the study, 507 maxillofacial surgical procedures were performed which allowed the hospital to comply with the international standards required for education of residents in this specialty. The strengths of the program were: trauma, and orthognathic surgery; the weaknesses were in the areas of reconstructive and cranial facial surgery. CONCLUSIONS: a statistical analysis was registered which will allow future comparative studies with recent data from the same institution to demonstrate the growth and consolidation of the specialty.
