Resumen

ACOSTA ORTIZ, Rodolfo  y  ROURA LUGO, Nelson. A review of the literature on the causal relationship between occlusal factors (OF) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) IV: experimental studies of occlusal adjustment by selective grinding as a preventive or therapeutical intervention. Rev Fac Odontol Univ Antioq [online]. 2009, vol.21, n.1, pp.98-111. ISSN 0121-246X.

INTRODUCTION: this is the fourth of this series of articles that have as purpose to present a literature review about the causal relationship between the occlusal factors (OF) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: in this article, it was presented and analyzed experimental studies in which researchers used occlusal adjustment (OA) as a therapeutic means for TMD and other associated disorders. RESULTS AND CONLUSIONS: the analysis of the studies presented in this literature review shows that the actual evidence does not support the use of OA as a primary therapeutic method. This especially true when one considers the fact that it is an irreversible treatment, with secondary effects (tooth sensitivity) and that is limited to certain occlusal schemes.

Palabras clave : occlusion; temporomadibular disorders; etiology; temporomandibular joint; experimental studies; occlusal adjustment; selective tooth grinding.
