This article presents the main results of a research on the configuration of school mathematics in Colombia during the second half of the 19th century. The methodological perspective used was the archeology and genealogy of Michel Foucault and, in particular, some appropriations made by the Group of History of Pedagogical Practice. The text is arranged in four sections. The first one is an introduction. The second section addresses theoretical and methodological aspects through the notion of 'school knowledge'. The third one provides a description of the constitution of school mathematics in the period between 1845 and 1906, which shows the close articulation of contents and teaching methods with educational issues of ethical, aesthetic and political order. The last section indicates conclusions and projections of the investigative exercise, the latter one of which is related to some criticisms and demands to contemporary school on the teaching of mathematics.
