Abstract

URIBE ZAPATA, Alejandro. A Pedagogical Look at Citizen Laboratories in Medellín, Colombia. Pedagogía y Saberes [online]. 2020, n.53, pp.97-109.  Epub May 11, 2021. ISSN 0121-2494.  https://doi.org/10.17227/pys.num53-10466.

This research article analyzes from a pedagogical standpoint a series of citizen laboratories in Medellín-Colombia. A qualitative design is used in which the sources of information are semi-structured interviews, participant observation and review of the websites and social networks of selected laboratories. The results were five emerging categories: people in charge of running the laboratories, target audiences, contents, methodologies, and places. The conclusions of the study show how the people in charge of this type of practices become constructivism amateurs, apprentices and artisans; the audiences become sectored despite the laboratories being open to the general public; the contents reinforce digital culture matters and are separated from the curriculum; the methodologies are inspired in free culture, the DIY/DIWÓ/DITÓ movement and the hacker ethics; and the physical spaces emulate the workshop spirit.

Keywords : educational innovation; education other than at school; informal education; non-formal education.
