Abstract

PEREZ FUENTES, Dewin. Liberalization, reforms and employment in manufacture industry in the Colombian Caribbean, 1974-2004. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.1, pp.142-161. ISSN 0121-3261.

This article aims at analyzing the main effects on employment, laborproductivity and labor costs in manufacturing industry in the Colombian Caribbean region of economic reforms that occurred in the nineties in the context of the internationalization and opening of the Colombian economy. Thepattern of industrialization and the technical intensive change of capital and labour-saving, are related to poor performance in terms of employment in regional industry after the reforms. On the other hand, the evolution of labor productivity and wages, reflecting a downward trend in unit labor costs, therefore, the explanation for the decline in employment must be different than wage pressures on corporate profits.

Keywords : Employment; labor productivity; unit labor costs.
